Art Miami: New Media Lounge
In December 2008, Asher Remy-Toledo developed and served as the artistic director for the Art Miami New Media Lounge, which represented a new addition to the city’s longest running art fair.
Continuing his philosophy of bringing art to unexpected locations, Remy-Toledo proposed the inclusion of media technology works borrowed from art institutions. Because the "Art Fair" as such is considered the center of the commercial art market, an unsuspecting audience looking for a product to buy was instead presented with immaterial works from institutions, effectively defeating their expectations and changing the climate of the fair.
Remy-Toledo returned to Art Miami the following year with Mapping the Blank Spots (2009), a showcase of videos that defined local realities within the global art community. Once again, the New Media Lounge brought an immaterial, non-commodity dimension to the fair. He invited curator Julia Draganovic, director of Kunsthalle, Osnabruck in Germany to work with him on this project, which featured videos by various international artists, all on loan from academic and private collections.
