I worked in partnership with Klaus Littman Projects to curate the first realization of the Sh-Contemporary art fair in Shanghai (2007), produced by Lorenzo Rudolph. The performance exhibition, Public Viewing, involved approximately 100 students who were bused throughout the city—to the airport terminal, The Peoples Park, and The Bund among other locations—where they were given handheld signs created by the artists. The signage was an unexpected and unusual display, the motivation for which remained unclear; an intervention in the life of the observer. In this way, my project not only provoked a response, but also demanded the observer actively interpret the work to generate meaning.
